Hama Sushi in Venice offers great food and an entertaining time – August 28th, 2002

Hama sushi is a favorite among the locals and anyone else in the area who loves sushi. Conveniently located in the heart of Venice, California, Hama is a sushi bar and restaurant with a lively atmosphere and eclectic crowd.

Patrons here seem to be more friendly and unpretentious than at some of the other sushi bars in the city, which makes Hama a great place to meet for a drink or mingle with others.

Hama has a great selection of dishes ranging from soups to salads to some popular appetizers such as tofu with seaweed, calamari, seared tuna, and soft shell crab. Many vegetable choices from Edamame, Grilled Eggplant, Steamed Asparagus and Sauteed Mushrooms. Besides the fabulous Sushi, some great entrees include different types of Tempura from Spicy Tuna, Shrimp, and Vegetable or a combination. Teriyaki Chicken, Beef, and Salmon are other tasty dinners. Then there is a wide variety of seafood and shell fish with such dishes as Grilled Yellowtail collar, grilled Chilean Seabass or Grilled or Fried Squid. Scallops, Clams, Crab Cakes, and Lobster are some of their other specialties.

The menu has all the delicious“standards”, but includes many different and unique dishes as well. The grilled squid marinated in sake and soy and served with a side of tangy mayonnaise is a favorite. Grilled eel skewers or sautéed scallops and asparagus in garlic butter go nicely with the wide variety of hot and cold sakes. The sake eye salmon melts in your mouth as does the toro. You can also get King Crab California rolls & Lobster rolls. For dessert, start with the pear which is sweet and refreshing or try the mochi which is ice-cream stuffed in rice cake. They also have Tempura Ice Cream which is deep fried and Banana Fritters with Chocolate Sauce.

Hama is also a great place to celebrate a birthday dinner. The Beatles “birthday song” is blasted over the speaker system while you are presented with a desert. The night is traditionally ended with the playing of the Eagles song “Hotel California” as everyone bangs the table three times when the initial drum beat comes in.

If you are looking for a quiet, intimate dining experience Hama might not be the one. If you are looking for an energetic place with friendly people and good sushi, Hama sushi in Venice is the spot to be.
