The Wave 94.7 Jazz Concert at UCLA – August 3rd, 2002

What a fabulous evening it turned out to be on August 3, 2002 for "The Wave’s" summer jazz concert at the UCLA Tennis Center.

This great night hosted by Pat Prescott of 94.7 KTWV-FM(as Dave Koz was on tour and could not attend), featured the best line-up they have ever had.

The Smooth Jazz All Starts were the first band to hit the stage as people were arriving for this seven plus hour show. More of the crowd was settling in when Ex-NBA basketball player, now turned contemporary jazz bassist "Wayman Tisdale" and his band took the stage. His newly released album "Face to Face" features some great R & B sounds with a passionate, sensual vibe. His jazz fusion style involves some old school soul and the band displayed some great tunes from that album along with some of his past stuff. Tisdale was a basketball star in College playing for Oklahoma University to the top of the ranks before making a name for himself in the pros playing for the Phoenix Suns among a couple other teams. He retired a few years back to pursue his other dream of playing some great jazz music and made his debut for this Wave L.A. concert.

The night continued with the famous and brilliant "Chaka Khan" and her Pop, R & B, jazz fusion band singing some of her past hits with some new entertaining songs that had the crowd buzzing. She had many people up dancing in their seats near the end of her set with her popular hit "I’m Every Woman". She has been honored with Five Grammy Awards and recorded 9 hot albums during her illustrious career that has spanned over 25 years. It is no wonder how great the talent was during this night when Chaka Kahn was not the headliner. As a matter of fact, there was another great act before Boz Scaggs closed the show.

This other great act that followed the Fabulous Chaka Khan was billed as "The Guitars and Saxes", which featured some unbelievable musicians. Mostly all instrumental, the guitar players featured were flamenco styled Marc Antoine and rockin, jazz, electric styled Jeff Golub. The awesome duo of Saxaphone specialists included Canadian born Warren Hill and legendary performer Richard Elliot. The group started out with a Jam session all together that was beyond words. After which, they all came out individually and played a few tunes by themselves before collaborating all together and joining one another for bits of songs during this extraordinary set. Antoine’s cool latin/jazz style reminds one of some beautiful spanish style guitar playing. Born in Paris, married his Spanish wife Rebecca which gave him extra influence in the spanish theme of his repetoire. His new release "Cruisin" is his most soulful cd to date. Next up was Warren Hill who had the crowd on it’s feet with his high energy style and melodies. He played some of his own original signature jazz along with some recognizeable tunes that the audience was singing along to. Jeff Golub followed with his brand of sultry electric guitar and R & B sounds. With his long blonde hair swaggering in the breeze, he pumped out some eclectic songs. He toured as Rod Stewart’s lead guitarist from 1988-1995 and now has made a mark of his own. Last but not least was Richard Elliot, one of the best saxaphone players in the world. He just completed his 11th solo release and tours all over. Born in Scottland, Richard joined the famous group "Tower of Power" before going solo in 1986. His funky, R & B flavors had the crowd wanting more. "The Guitars and Saxes" also tour all over the U.S. and internationally and provide some of the best listening music around. They had the audience captivated while Boz Scaggs was getting ready to come on.

The evening crowd now settled in, awaited the headliner, infamous Boz Scaggs. His Blues/Rock style was a nice ending to a great night. While he played some of his newer songs, he of course sang many of his hits including "Lowdown" and "Lido Shuffle" as his encore song. Backed by his brilliant band with some great female backup vocalists, Scaggs had the attention of everyone while he entertained to the conclusion of this star filled jazz event.
