Dining in Laguna Beach:

We recently had 2 nice restaurant experiences in this beautiful city. One was just south of downtown at a place called Starfish. This hip joint serves up some delicious sushi rolls and raw bar items. We had the tasty ahi poke with avocado, tobika and tarot chips along with the lobster roll. Both musts!

We also tried the thai basil calamari and Chilean sea bass in black bean sauce. Fabulous. The menu is very extensive with an assortment of meat, fish and veggie dishes. There is a separate section of rice, noodles, soups and salads. The bar menu has some great signature cocktails and wines. We came when it was quiet at lunch but could tell it is a very popular happy hour and dinner spot. The décor is beautiful and service was great. The fusion of food along with the modern atmosphere and friendly vibe makes this place a top pick the next time visiting Laguna Beach.

If you want the real experience, come for dinner.  The place is buzzing even when we dined on a Monday night.  The seafood was so fresh and we loved the variety.  Choose from sushi to fantastic soups including Pho or some of the best Wonton Soups you will ever have.  The calamari appetizer is not to miss.   The selection of fresh fish is amazing.  I had the delicious Chilean sea bass in a black bean sauce, which was a tough choice over wild halibut or miso cod.   The beef filet was very tender and my daughters loved it along with the chow mein noodles with mixed veggies and prawns.   The bar was hopping with the great atmosphere and lighting.  For a fantastic meal and dining experience, make sure to visit Starfish on your next visit to Laguna Beach.   Archie, the manager, is so hospitable and welcoming to every guest.

Mandarin King, located just north of downtown in a non-touristic area with a down to earth atmosphere. It is family run for over 30 yrs and you know what you get. Friendly service, good food and a satisfying experience. Start with one of their dumplings, egg roll dishes and won ton soup. For entrees, try your favorite protein (beef, pork, chicken, seafood, veggies) with your preferred preparation from spicy to sweeter. A big selection of chow mein/noodles and fried rice options accompany your meal. Some of our favorites were the honey walnut chicken, king pao chicken and beef with broccoli.
