“Mystere” Cirque du Soleil Show at Treasure Island Las Vegas is Spectacular (12/05)

MYSTERE

In a devast land of darkness and a variety of creatures Mystere’s Cirque du Soleil begins with a humorous introduction.  While not knowing the exact execution of laughter, the audience finally catches on.  Audience members who do not know they are part of the act and are led to wrong seats, followed and mocked which at some points puts them in a state of confusion and humility; at the same time they can share a laugh with the other members in the orchestra as they finally catch on.

The show continues its humor with a puppet/man’s conversation disrupted by the reparable usher.  In contrast to the light and direct humor, Mystere also contains darkness from a grown baby crying crawling, running and falling to a number of acts on a mechanical stage that lowers beneath ground level sharing a variety of acts.  Whether it is the taiko drummers (Japanese drums) playing on stage or mid-air, the live band, contemporary ballet, or a number of acrobatic performances: gymnasts on an aerial cube, Chinese poles, hand to hand balancing, trampoline, bungee, swinging on high bars and Korean plank acts, one will be swept away into another world: a futuristic circus.

In this case, one will not see live animals, yet there are a variety of numerous characters dancing, climbing, hanging, swinging, jumping and flying that will keep one’s mind completely occupied while trying to stay focused.

Mystere’s colors are exquisite from a variety of creatures to the ever-changing stage and vivid sets.

The costumes are extremely colorful and stand out from one another: ranging from a vibrant red bird, a grown baby to a number of unfamiliar creatures.

Mystere creates mixed emotions from overall humor reappearing throughout the show to a number of unfathomable creatures in a land of tragedy.

After its recent December 25th twelve year anniversary, Cirque du Solei’s Mystere maintains the

same standards of the award winning presentation that it is. A reassuring statement for either

those who have not seen it, or those who have and would like to see it again.

Mystere is a must see journey into a futuristic yet ancient colorful circus, surrounded by a variety of characters behind a story, from a capriciously funny jumbo and a small babies, prehistoric alien like creatures that crawl down form the walls and emerge from an impressive mechanical stage, rare birds to a tribal Taiko drum (Japanese drum) opening presentation hanging from the ceiling that will get your heart restless to its beat.

Now imagine in this exquisite mysterious world, astonishing score 10 gymnastic, acrobatic and unique dance performances…..every night! accompanied by flawless live complementing music with singing goddesses.

Beyond the vivid visuals, the ever changing costumes and set, Mystere’s journey is a journey of emotions. A one men joggling of a tubular cleverly illuminated cube and a multiple performer jaw dropping act on Chinese poles gives you an exhilarating feeling, two brothers on top of a slowly gyrating dome execute a powerful demonstration of strength in such an artistic moving sculptures way that brings a certain sadness, your attention is constantly redirected to every part of the theater as with the bird like bungee aerial ballet from the ceiling then down to the stage for the Korean trampoline act bringing back the exhilaration.

The humor is delivered by the clown remanding us of a bratty child, followed by a more classic circus act, the high bar with the ground net giving you a nostalgic traditional feeling. But make no mistake, the tradition stops there, every thing else about it has the Cirque du Solei stamp all over. .

Behind all these seaming less interconnected acts is of course the intended story from its director Franco Dragone, the story of life, hence the emotional ups and downs, light and darkness, and evolving time, as in the return of the Taiko drums close to the end with its central performer playing an enormous drum center stage to remind us of how the future is built from our past., leading to a stellar finale around a huge snail, the herald of the future.

Make sure to walk around the beautiful Treasure Island Hotel before or after the show with other attractions, restaurants and shops.
