Los Cabos Mexican Tennis Open Preview, Info for new ATP event- August 8th-13th, 2016
Ivo Karlovic wins Cabo Open defeating Feliciano Lopez in the Finals of the first tournament there. Some big names pulled out last minute plus the Rio Olympics hurt the event but they hope to get more popular each year.
BIG STARS TO SHINE IN CABO-
I recently had a phone interview with José Antonio Fernández Celorio, the Tournament Director.
He is so excited to showcase the new tournament in beautiful Cabo San Lucas featuring many
players. This will be the first event here as it was bought and moved from Columbia after being
in Los Angeles for so long. Mr. Fernandez Celorio was so enthusiastic and has great plans for the
players to impress them for return visits and attract even bigger names in the future, he told me.
There will be plenty of activities during the day from camel rides to art, culinary and beach
excursions. “The players will be very impressed and have a great overall experience”, he said.
Other surprises are included to grow and make this tourney bigger and better. They are in their
final planning stages with courts and grandstands being built at a school nearby the high end
hotels where the players will be staying.
Cabo’s original cut off #71
French addition: Benoit Paire, Lucas Pouille and Julien Benneteau
Los Cabos Mexican Tennis Open will be the only tournament in the world to offer ATP ranking
points. With a fantastic acceptance listwhere all 19 players are ranked
amongst the ATP top 100, the Los Cabos Mexican Open first edition,
will be held from august 8 to august 13, in Baja California Sur, Mexico.
The list is led by ATP’s young sensation, Dominic Thiem (AUT), currently ranked 8th in the
Emirates ATP Rankings. Three great Frenchmen entered the list, Benoit Paire (number 23),
Lucas Pouille (number 30) and Julien Benneteau (number 39) to join the fight for the title along
with the already confirmed players Feliciano López, Ivo Karlovic, Alexandr Dolgopolov, Sam
Querrey, Jeremy Chardy, Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Marcel Granollers and Nicolas Almagro. All of
whom are ranked inside the ATP top 50! With one of the four best prize money’s of the ATP 250
category, the Los Cabos Mexican Open will be the only ATP tournament to be played in the
world and therefore the only event that will grant Emirates ATP Ranking Points as
well as a $800,000 USD prize money.
The fact that los Cabos connects with 40 destinations is highly beneficial to the tournament. The
great connectivity allows players and visitors to travel to Cabo simply and comfortably.
The Organizing Committee is really satisfied with the players’ response to the tournament.
Being able to present a solid and attractive draw, assures a week of spectacular tennis in one of
the best destinations in the world.
