(Santa Monica, CA –Dec 12th-29th) – Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning writer, actor and
comedian Monica Piper returns to The Braid with her critically acclaimed one-woman comedy
NOT THAT JEWISH, a special engagement just in time for the holidays. This hilarious, yet
deeply poignant autobiographical journey offers a warm, rich, and complex portrait that
resonates deeply amid the current global rise in antisemitism and recent cultural discussions.
On stage with the passion and comedy chops that earned her a Showtime Network comedy
special and an American Comedy Award nomination as one of the TOP FIVE female comedians
in the country, Monica Piper brings her authentic humor to audiences in Los Angeles.

NOT THAT JEWISH is the hilarious yet deeply poignant comedy. From a funny family in the Bronx, to
a WASP wedding, her first step on a comedy club stage, and an “almost” night with Mickey
Mantle, Monica was content loving chopped liver and saying things like, “I’ll be doing laundry ‘til
Shovuous.” That was Jewish enough… until she adopted a son. Unable to deny the need to
“pass it down,” she does all she can to raise a Jewish man. But, when on the eve of his 18 th
birthday, he asks a question that rocks her world, Monica must finally decide what being Jewish
truly means. Reminiscent of Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays with a peppering of Neil Simon’s Lost In
Yonkers, NOT THAT JEWISH is 85 lightning-fast minutes of funny, moving and inspirational
theater. Audiences leave laughed out, a little teary-eyed, and happy to be Jewish … even those
who aren’t.
Piper’s illustrious TV writing career began when she was recruited to write for the iconic series
Roseanne. She continued as a writer on Mad About You and Veronica’s Closet. After her work
with the cult favorite Duckman, she became the head writer of the #1 children’s animated series,
Rugrats, for which she won an Emmy. With her experience as a writer and stand-up, Piper’s
comedic and storytelling talents are on full display in this captivating production.
“I want people to walk away from this show feeling uplifted,” Piper says. “It’s about so much
more than being Jewish—it’s about what makes us human, what connects us, and how we find
humor and hope in the toughest moments of life.”
A hit with audiences and critics alike, The New York Times raves “…Funny…delicious…a
gem,” while The Huffington Post cites the show as “very funny and very real. Piper may not be
that Jewish, but with this outpouring she's that good.” and Fran Drescher called it “Very funny,
honest and touching.”

“We’re thrilled to bring Monica back to The Braid,” says Ronda Spinak, Artistic Director. “Her
story is not just a Jewish story; it’s a story for everyone. It’s about facing life with laughter and
resilience, and I can't think of anything more inspiring for our times.”
