Scopa Italian Roots Fine Dining in Marina del Rey is high quality and popular- Nov 2025

If you’re looking for a lively and memorable  night out in the Marina del Rey area, Scopa Italian Roots delivers in spades—and it’s easy to see why the place was hopping when we visited.

The Vibe & Experience

Arriving just after sunset, the atmosphere is electric: a warmly lit, high-ceilinged space with brick walls, an expansive bar, communal tables and plenty of buzz. The energy of a crowd enjoying craft cocktails and excellent Italian-American fare is unmistakable. According to reviewers, the space evokes an “organic feel” with exposed duct-work and a real sense of celebration.
Parking is easy thanks to an adjacent lot (valet option too) or nearby free street parking, which makes the logistics much more comfortable for a Westside night out.

The Chef & Culinary Team

The driving force behind this kitchen is acclaimed chef-restaurateur Antonia Lofaso. She brings her Italian-American upbringing and formal culinary training to every dish at Scopa.
Her accolades include appearances on major food-network shows and solid recognition in the industry; her deep love for classic Italian fare and fresh ingredients is clearly reflected in the menu.
Chef Darreck was the head chef who take great care of us.

Stand-out Dishes & Highlights

Here are a few favourites we strongly recommend:

  • Yucatán Scallops (listed as “Scallops Oreganata – brown butter, lemon” on their menu) — sautéed to absolute perfection, the brown-butter sauce elevates them beautifully.
  • Black-Squid Ink Calamari (listed under “Fried Calamari – squid ink, lemon”) — the squid-ink gives the dish a briny depth and a distinctive look.
  • Brussels Sprout Salad (or “Raw Brussels Sprouts – pecorino, romano, parsley, grapes, olive oil, sherry vinegar, toasted almonds”) — a sleeper hit: fresh, crisp, unexpected, and very tasty.
  • Beet & Burrata Salad (“Baby Beets – peaches, burrata, tarragon, vanilla”) — a vibrant, flavor-rich starter that complements the heavier dishes.
  • Rigatoni with Vodka Sauce — a house-made pasta highlight: rigatoni tossed in vodka sauce, chili, basil, fresh ricotta.
  • Whole Branzino — the best entrée on the menu in our view: perfectly grilled, beautifully presented, fennel-frond, lemon, basil. Solid execution.

The food is top-tier. Portion sizes, plating, flavor balance — all feel elevated but with the warmth of a neighborhood Italian spot.

Drinks & Ambience Extras

Their cocktail game is as strong as the kitchen. With a full bar, serious craft-cocktails, amaro focuses, and a strong Italian-focused wine list, you’ll want to linger.
Also: Don’t miss the speakeasy style lounge (or bar area) next door or “on the other side of the parking lot” if you want a pre- or post-dinner drink away from the main dining room. It adds a fun twist to the evening.  Reservations a must.

Why You Should Book Ahead

Reservations are strongly recommended — this place doesn’t feel like a “walk-in and hope” spot on any night. The mood, the crowd, the buzz all make it a magnet.
Also, the website provides direct booking: https://www.scopaitalianroots.com/
And highlights: “Our Roots” section speaks to the tradition and authenticity behind the cuisine. sc

Final Thoughts

If you’re celebrating, out for a date, or just want a great Italian dinner with flair, Scopa delivers. The combination of chef-driven cuisine, house-made pastas, standout seafood, craft drinks and vibrant milieu make it a standout on the Westside. The starters mentioned are precisely the kind of thoughtful dishes that elevate the experience, and the whole-branzino entrée is absolutely the kind of show-stopper you’ll remember.    Usually the tiramisu is the best Italian dessert, but we thought the homemade mochi style donuts with the top choice for dessert here.

Tip: Arrive a little early to enjoy a drink in the bar (or speakeasy-style lounge) to set the tone. Dress smart-casual. Make the reservation, mention any dietary preferences (they seemed versatile). Enjoy the full evening — your meal, the cocktails, the atmosphere.
