DINING:

Slanted Door in Napa is not just a restaurant—it is a refined culinary journey, an elegant tribute to Vietnamese cuisine, and a heartfelt expression of Chef Charles Phan’s lifelong mission to honor tradition while reimagining it through a modern, California lens. From the moment you step inside, you feel that you are about to experience something extraordinary: a perfect harmony of culture, craftsmanship, and culinary excellence.

The space itself is breathtaking. Romantic yet modern, warm yet sophisticated, it features a stunning bar, multiple beautifully designed dining rooms for more intimate gatherings, and a gorgeous outdoor patio. One of the most enchanting details is the view into the kitchen—watching the team move with precision and grace adds another layer of appreciation to the entire experience. And yes, the patio is dog-friendly, making this a rare gem where elegance and warmth coexist effortlessly.

We began our meal with an array of cold starters that set the tone for what would become an unforgettable evening.

The Japanese yellowtail, garnished with fried shallots and Thai basil, was nothing short of sublime. The fish was pristine—silky, delicate, and fresh—while the shallots added a gentle crunch and the Thai basil brought a subtle herbal lift that lingered beautifully on the palate. Each bite was clean, vibrant, and perfectly balanced, showcasing the purity of the ingredients and the thoughtful restraint of the seasoning.

Next came the wild gulf shrimp spring rolls, and they were simply stunning. Wrapped with precision and elegance, the rolls were filled with tender shrimp, fragrant mint, and paired with a silky shallot mayonnaise and rich peanut sauce. The textures were exquisite—crisp yet soft, fresh yet indulgent—and the flavors danced between brightness and depth in the most satisfying way. These were not just spring rolls; they were an elevated expression of a classic, executed with finesse and soul.

For a warm starter, we enjoyed the daikon rice cake, accompanied by preserved daikon, pickled turnip, and sweet chili soy. This dish was a revelation—soft and gently chewy, with a subtle sweetness and comforting warmth. The preserved and pickled vegetables added layers of acidity and complexity, while the sweet chili soy brought a delicate umami finish. It was both nostalgic and inventive, a dish that felt deeply rooted in tradition while beautifully modern.

Then came the chicken watercress soup—a bowl of pure comfort and elegance. Made with heritage chicken bone broth, ga vien, watercress, and white pepper, this soup was deeply nourishing and aromatic. The broth was rich yet remarkably clean, infused with layers of savory depth that felt soothing and luxurious at the same time. The watercress added a gentle peppery brightness, and the white pepper provided a subtle warmth that lingered just long enough to invite the next spoonful. It was the kind of soup that nourishes both body and soul.

For the main course, we ordered the iconic shaking beef, and it more than lived up to its legendary reputation. Made with Cape Grim grass-fed tenderloin, served with watercress, red onion, and seasoned lime sauce, this dish is a masterpiece of restraint and precision.

What makes this dish truly special is its lightness. The sauce is intentionally delicate, allowing the full, natural flavor of the beef to shine through. The meat was cooked to absolute perfection—tender, juicy, and kissed with a beautiful glaze that caramelized just enough to add depth without overwhelming. Each bite was rich yet clean, bold yet balanced, indulgent yet refined. It is one of those rare dishes that feels both luxurious and effortless, a true signature that defines the essence of Slanted Door.

We paired the shaking beef with two extraordinary vegetable sides. The Chinese eggplant, prepared with coconut milk and sate, was velvety and deeply flavorful. The eggplant melted in the mouth, infused with gentle sweetness from the coconut milk and a subtle spice from the sate that lingered beautifully without overpowering. It was comforting, complex, and absolutely addictive.

The baby bok choy with shiitake mushrooms and fish sauce was equally exquisite. The bok choy was perfectly tender with just enough bite, the shiitakes added earthy depth, and the fish sauce brought a savory umami that tied everything together seamlessly. It was a simple dish elevated to something truly special through technique, balance, and care.

Slanted Door is also renowned for its cocktail program, and my drink was nothing short of exceptional. I ordered the Single Barrel Manhattan, made with John J. Bowman Single Barrel bourbon, Dolin Rouge vermouth, and bitters. It was bold, smooth, and impeccably balanced—rich in flavor yet refined, with a silky finish that made each sip feel indulgent and perfectly timed between courses. It paired beautifully with the meal and added another layer of luxury to the experience.

Beyond the food, what truly sets Slanted Door apart is the service. The staff was warm, attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the menu. Their suggestions were thoughtful, their timing impeccable, and their presence graceful—never intrusive, always present when needed. It felt like dining with a team that truly cares about your experience, and that level of hospitality elevates an already extraordinary meal into something unforgettable.

Portions were generous without being overwhelming, and for the exceptional quality of the ingredients, the craftsmanship, the service, and the ambiance, the pricing felt more than reasonable. This is fine dining with heart—refined but never pretentious, elegant yet deeply welcoming.

Slanted Door is not just a place to eat; it is a place to celebrate food, culture, craftsmanship, and connection. It is romantic, modern, soulful, and unforgettable. Whether you are enjoying a quiet dinner for two, gathering with friends, or bringing along your furry companion to the patio, this restaurant offers an experience that lingers long after the last bite.

Located right on the Windsor Town Green, KIN celebrates the best of Californian comfort food with a creative, seasonal twist and an atmosphere that’s perfect for friends, family, or a night out.

Start your meal with their clam chowder — rich, creamy, and deeply flavorful — followed by the kale salad with shrimp and avocado, which strikes a perfect balance of freshness, texture, and zest. These dishes set the tone for a truly memorable meal.

For entrees, the shrimp in a rich sauce over creamy polenta is a standout: succulent prawns bathed in a luscious Cajun-tomato cream sauce that pairs beautifully with the smooth polenta base. The fresh salmon, cooked to perfection, is another highlight — flaky, tender, and seasoned just right.

Enhance your dinner with a local glass of wine or craft cider from Sonoma County — the perfect complement to the bold, comforting flavors on the menu and a true taste of the region’s best offerings.

Gott’s Roadside in downtown Napa is a must-visit, perfectly capturing a modern “roadside chic” vibe in a prime central location. The atmosphere is vibrant and cool, featuring a spacious outdoor terrace that is ideal for people-watching while enjoying the California sunshine.

Inside, the decor balances nostalgia with contemporary industrial design, utilizing sleek metal accents, bright neon signage, and large windows that flood the space with natural light. Despite being a high-energy spot where you order at the counter, the service is surprisingly personal; we were greeted with a big smile that set a great tone for the meal.
The food truly stands out for its fresh, elevated take on American classics:
  • Dungeness Crab & Bay Shrimp Louie: A standout West Coast dish. The crab and shrimp were incredibly fresh, paired with creamy avocado and a zesty lemon-Dijon vinaigrette.
  • Kimchi Turkey Burger: An explosion of flavor. The spicy gochujang mayo and kimchi provided a perfect kick, balanced by a fried egg and smoky Zoe’s bacon.
  • Baja Fish Tacos: The mahi mahi was perfectly beer-battered and crisp, served in organic corn tortillas with a refreshing cilantro slaw.
  • Sweet Potato Fries: These are addictive, especially with the chili spice dusting and house-made ranch.
  • Coffee Shake: Do not skip this—it is absolutely incredible and the perfect creamy finish to the meal.
While the menu feels premium, the prices are very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes provided. If you are in Napa, I highly recommend stopping by for the great food and unbeatable family atmosphere.

Wine Tasting:

Benovia Winery is a standout destination in the Russian River Valley, celebrated for its commitment to small-batch, estate-grown excellence. Named in honor of the founders’ fathers, the winery has built a prestigious reputation for producing world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from heritage vineyards. Each vintage reflects a perfect balance of traditional craftsmanship and unique terroir, making it a favorite for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The highlight of our visit was the incredible hospitality provided by our hostess, Madeleine. From the moment we arrived at the charming Ranch House tasting room, she made us feel right at home with a warm and genuine welcome. Madeleine’s passion for Benovia’s history was evident as she guided us through the property, sharing the stories behind the vineyards while ensuring our experience was both personal and relaxed. Her knowledge and attentiveness added a layer of depth to the visit that made it feel like more than just a tasting; it felt like being welcomed into the Benovia family.
As we progressed through the wine collection, Madeleine accompanied us through each flight, offering expert insights into the nuances of every pour. Whether we were sampling the vibrant Martaella Estate Chardonnay or the complex Cohn Vineyard Pinot Noir, she meticulously explained the unique terroir and winemaking techniques that defined each vintage. Her ability to tailor the tasting to our interests ensured that every glass was an educational and sensory delight. We left feeling thoroughly impressed, not just by the exceptional quality of the wines, but by the thoughtful and engaging care Madeleine provided throughout our afternoon.

Foppiano Vineyards is located in Healdsburg, in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. The winery offers a fabulous wine tasting experience in a spacious and welcoming setting with a large outdoor patio that provides a beautiful view of the vineyards.

An Exceptional Wine Tasting Experience at Foppiano Vineyards
Our recent visit to Foppiano Vineyards was a truly memorable experience. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was incredibly welcoming, blending historic charm with a bright, recently renovated feel.
The space is both spacious and very welcoming, allowing guests to relax in comfort. Sliding glass walls in the tasting room open onto a refreshed outdoor patio, which is the real highlight. The big outdoor patio is perfect for unwinding, with plenty of seating and charming new landscaping and picnic spots.
The view is simply stunning; you can sit back and sip your wine while overlooking the picturesque terroir of the sprawling Petite Sirah vineyards. It’s a tranquil and beautiful setting that perfectly complements the tasting experience.
Our hostess Janessa was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate, sharing the winery’s rich history and stories of survival through Prohibition, which adds a fascinating layer to the tasting.
The wines themselves are exquisite. While Foppiano is famous for its robust Petite Sirah—especially the highly-praised Gianna’s Block Reserve—the tasting menu offers a diverse range of high-quality varietals, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. Also The Grant Station Carignane is an absolute revelation and a standout during the tasting. Sourced from ancient vines grown near the historic railway spur, this wine offers a captivating aromatic profile of Santa Rosa plum, lilac, and toasted rosemary.
For a down-to-earth, yet sophisticated, wine tasting experience with excellent service and a beautiful view, Foppiano Vineyards is an absolute must-visit. You can book your tasting or find more information on the official Foppiano Vineyards website.
Limerick Lane Cellars is a true sanctuary for wine lovers, offering an experience that feels like a warm embrace from the moment you arrive. The property captures the historic soul of Sonoma County, blending rustic charm with a refined sense of elegance. Walking through the estate, you can feel the deep history of the land and the care poured into every single vine. It is the kind of place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of Healdsburg.
Our visit was made truly unforgettable by our host, Andy, whose passion for the craft is absolutely infectious. It was a joy to listen to him speak, as he clearly knows every detail of these wines by heart and shares that knowledge with genuine warmth. He didn’t just pour wine; he told the story of the soil, the climate, and the legacy of the estate with a musician’s soul. His enthusiasm transformed the tasting into an educational and deeply personal journey through the Russian River Valley.
The tasting room itself provides a very nice and cozy atmosphere that perfectly complements the world-class wines. Large windows frame the picturesque views of the vineyard, allowing you to gaze out at the gnarly, historic vines while you sip. The interior design strikes a perfect balance between modern comfort and farmhouse chic, creating a space that is both sophisticated and relaxed. Sitting there with a glass in hand, watching the light dance across the rolling hills of the estate, is pure magic. It is the ideal setting for a quiet afternoon of reflection or a joyful celebration with loved ones. The connection between the glass in your hand and the view out the window is simply seamless.
When it comes to the wine itself, the Zinfandels are undoubtedly the stars of the show and easily some of the best in the region. Each sip reveals a complex layers of dark fruit, spice, and a refined elegance that sets them apart from more jammy varieties. The 1910 Block, in particular, showcases the incredible depth that only century-old vines can produce. There is a distinctive “sense of place” in these bottles, offering a perfect balance of power and acidity that dances on the palate. Even if you aren’t typically a Zinfandel drinker, these bottles will likely change your mind with their suave tannins and long, graceful finishes. They are a masterclass in what this varietal can achieve when handled with such expertise and respect.
Leaving Limerick Lane, we felt a profound sense of gratitude for the experience and the wonderful people who make it possible. It is clear that this winery is a labor of love, from the meticulous vineyard management to the thoughtful hospitality in the tasting room. Every detail, from the stories shared by Andy to the stunning views of the vines, contributed to a perfect afternoon. If you are looking for a winery that combines world-class Zinfandel with a soul-stirring atmosphere, this is the place to be. We already cannot wait for our next visit to this special Healdsburg gem.

Nestled in the rolling hills of Calistoga, Castello di Amorosa is a breathtaking architectural masterpiece that transports you straight to the heart of Tuscany. From the moment we pulled up the long driveway, we were captivated by the authenticity of the 13th-century style castle, complete with a moat, drawbridge, and towering turrets. The attention to detail is staggering, with hand-squared stones and antique bricks that make the entire estate feel like a hidden piece of European history. It is truly one of the most stunning landmarks in Napa Valley, offering an atmosphere that is as romantic as it is grand.
Our experience was made truly unforgettable by our exceptional host, Eli, who guided us through the castle’s storied halls. Eli’s passion for the winery was evident from the start, as he shared fascinating insights into the construction of the fortress and the winemaking philosophy of the estate. He was incredibly knowledgeable and charismatic, ensuring that every question we had was answered with a blend of expertise and warmth. Having a guide like Eli transformed a simple visit into a personal journey through the artistry of Italian-inspired viticulture.
The tour of the property is an absolute must-see, taking you deep into the subterranean levels where the real magic happens. We wandered through the sprawling barrel rooms and even visited the authentic torture chamber, which added a thrilling sense of intrigue to the afternoon. Every corner of the castle tells a story, and seeing the craftsmanship of the vaulted ceilings and the quiet serenity of the aging cellars was a highlight of our trip. It is a rare opportunity to see a working winery that doubles as a living museum, and the scale of the architecture is simply amazing.
When it came time for the tasting, the wines were nothing short of incredible, exceeding even our highest expectations. For those who appreciate the bold character of Napa Valley, the selection offered a sophisticated array of flavors that danced on the palate. Each pour was a testament to the quality of the estate’s vineyards, showcasing a perfect balance of fruit, acidity, and structure. The setting of the tasting room, combined with the world-class service, made every sip feel like a special occasion that we didn’t want to end.
While every bottle was impressive, the experience was a true paradise for Cabernet lovers. The Cabernet Sauvignons we sampled were deeply complex and velvety, featuring the rich, dark fruit notes and elegant tannins that this region is famous for. Eli expertly highlighted the nuances of each vintage, allowing us to fully appreciate the depth and craftsmanship behind these robust reds. If you are a fan of bold, cellar-worthy Cabernets, a visit to Castello di Amorosa is an essential pilgrimage for your next Napa Valley adventure.
In addition the winery produces traditional Italian-style wines that complement its 13th-century Tuscan castle theme and is famous for its award-winning sweet and sparkling selections.

Our experience at the WALT Napa Oxbow tasting room was nothing short of extraordinary. Located in the heart of the historic Oxbow district—just across the street from the Oxbow Public Market—this intimate venue is a stunning blend of a sleek bar, lovely private spaces, and modern art from the Hall’s personal collection.
We participated in the wine and chocolate degustation, and it was a masterclass in flavor harmony. Our wine educator, Jessica Ely, was exceptional. Her passion and expertise transformed the tasting into an immersive journey through expressive Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sourced from the Pacific Coast’s finest vineyards.
Jessica guided us through how each specific chocolate was curated to elevate the nuances of the wine by hand-crafted Earth & Sky Chocolates . Every pairing was perfectly balanced, turning each sip and bite into a genuine moment of joy. If you are visiting downtown Napa, this refined sensory experience is an absolute must.
Visiting Martin Ray Vineyards and Winery was such a memorable highlight of our trip to the Russian River Valley. The winery is steeped in history; Martin Ray himself was a true pioneer in the 1930s and 40s, famous for his “fanatical” commitment to 100% varietal, unadulterated wines. Today, the vineyard is well known for continuing that legacy by producing exceptional terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from some of California’s most iconic appellations.
Martin Ray Vineyards and Winery has expanded its offerings and now produces white sparkling wine as well as rosé. This is a more recent development for the winery, though founder Martin Ray himself was a sparkling wine enthusiast.
Their sparkling wines are produced in-house using the traditional method, which involves a secondary fermentation in the bottle, and aged for a minimum of three years en tirage (on the lees) to develop complexity and a fine mousse.
Our host, Jaimy, was absolutely wonderful. Her description of each wine was incredibly poetic, bringing every aspect of the tasting to life and making the experience feel truly personal. We enjoyed our tasting on the sunny outdoor patio—a beautiful, serene spot that captures the best of Sonoma’s weather.
A few special touches made the visit even better:
  • Tasting Pairing: Our wine tasting came with a delicious little quiche, which was such a thoughtful and tasty addition.
  • Pizza Nights: We learned they host popular pizza nights on certain days (like their Pizza Pop-Up Weekends in early 2026), featuring wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizzas.
  • Scenic Views: The patio overlooks lush gardens and the estate’s historic 12-acre vineyard, making it a perfect place to relax.
If you’re looking for a winery with a rich historical soul and a warm, inviting atmosphere, a stop at Martin Ray is a must.
Our visit to the La Crema Estate at Saralee’s Vineyard was the absolute highlight of our Sonoma trip. From the moment we arrived, the environment was incredibly welcoming and put us right in the mood to relax. The historic barn is a masterpiece of restoration, perfectly blending rustic charm with a sleek, contemporary design. We spent our afternoon on the balcony, which offers breathtaking panoramic vineyard views that truly capture the essence of the Russian River Valley.
Our hostess was wonderful—kind, engaging, and highly educated about the wines. We appreciated that they are happy to accommodate the wines according to your specific preferences. We chose to start our tasting with three distinct Chardonnays, followed by three exceptional Pinot Noirs. Most of these were exclusive estate wines, featuring small-batch, high-quality, and limited-edition releases that are often unavailable elsewhere.
To round out the experience, our tasting was paired with a generous charcuterie and cheese board. It featured delicious local Marin County cheeses and premium Healdsburg meats that were curated to perfectly complement each pour. If you are looking for an elevated experience, I highly recommend booking a tasting at La Crema Estate for your next visit.
A visit to Notre Vue Estate in Windsor is less of a typical wine tasting and more of a tranquil retreat into one of Sonoma’s most stunning landscapes. Spanning 710 acres that bridge the Chalk Hill and Russian River Valley AVAs, the estate lives up to its name (“Our View”) with a serene atmosphere that feels worlds away from the more crowded tourist hubs.
The “Vue” and Atmosphere
The estate is a “hidden gem” reached via a long, scenic drive through rolling vineyard blocks. On a bright, sunny day, the Block 23 Terrace offers a jaw-dropping panoramic view of the vineyards and the 350-acre “Forever Wild” nature preserve. For an even more peaceful experience, the Lakeside Pavilions provide a secluded, restorative setting where you can sip wine while watching egrets and herons glide over the water.
Tasting with Zach
Estate Ambassador Zach Gold is frequently highlighted by guests for his warm, engaging hospitality. A tasting with him is both fun and educational; he brings the wines to life through storytelling, often sharing details about the estate’s unique microclimates and sustainable farming. His attentive service ensures a well-paced afternoon, whether you are a novice or a seasoned connoisseur.
Award-Winning Wines
The estate features two labels: Balverne, known for approachable, fruit-forward styles, and the premium Notre Vue line. Recent 2024 and 2025 accolades include:
  • 2021 Notre Vue Malbec: Named “Malbec of the Year” at the 2025 Sommeliers Choice Awards and earned “Best of Class” at the Dan Berger Wine Competition.
  • 2021 Notre Vue Merlot: Awarded “Double Gold” and “Best of Class” at the 2025 Sunset International Wine Competition.
  • 2023 Balverne Rosé of Pinot Noir: Won a Platinum Medal (94 points) at the 2024 Sommelier Challenge and a Gold Medal at the 2025 San Francisco Chronicle Competition.
  • 2021 Notre Vue Pinot Noir: A “Double Gold” winner praised for its sublime elegance.
Charcuterie and Cheese
The tasting is beautifully complemented by an optional artisanal charcuterie board. It features:
  • Local Cheeses: Creamy selections often sourced from Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Co..
  • Premium Meats: Expertly cured meats from Journeyman Meat Co..
  • Accompaniments: Seasonal fruits, nuts, and crackers that harmonize perfectly with both the crisp whites and robust reds.
For the best experience, you can book a Terrace Tasting or a more private Lakeside Pavilion session directly through the winery.

Biking:

We recently had a fantastic experience with Getaway Adventures & Bike Rentals during a trip to Sonoma. The staff was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and clearly very experienced; they were able to provide excellent tips on the best routes to take.
They offer an impressive variety of options tailored to every type of cyclist, whether you are an experienced rider, a casual occasional biker, or someone looking for a more sporty challenge. Their prices are also quite affordable compared to other rentals in the area. For those planning a day exploring the local wine trails, I highly recommend their electric bikes, which make navigating the scenic routes effortless.
The rental also includes all the necessary accessories, such as helmets, bags, and locks, so you are fully prepared for the day. One important tip: make sure to double-check your GPS! They recently moved, so ensure you head to their new address at 402 Moore Lane, Healdsburg, CA 95448. Overall, it was a very positive experience and I would definitely rent from them again.
