The Little Door in LA- Inspired French Mediterranean Gem- August 2026

The Little Door is one of those restaurants that feels special the moment you walk through the door. Located on West 3rd Street in Los Angeles, this charming French-Mediterranean restaurant combines an incredibly romantic setting with thoughtfully prepared food featuring fresh, carefully selected ingredients sourced from different farmers markets around Los Angeles.

The atmosphere is simply wonderful. The lighting is perfectly tamisé, creating an intimate and romantic mood without being too dark. The eclectic décor, music, and lively energy are all perfectly balanced. We visited on a busy Friday night, yet we could still have a great conversation without having to shout across the table. There is a wonderful liveliness throughout the restaurant, while each table somehow feels like its own little secluded space.

Our server, Lilith, was absolutely lovely—sweet, attentive, and very helpful in guiding us through the menu. It was honestly difficult to choose because so many dishes sounded tempting, but we managed to narrow it down!

Chef Ben Stephens has been cooking for over 20 years, and am a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park NY. I worked in many mom-and-pop shops growing up but after school I moved to San Francisco and gained experience in Michelin kitchens, La Folie (now closed) and Acquerello. I prefer to cook French base with lighter California/seasonal flavors. My favorite dishes would be Chicken Fines Herbs, anything pasta or rice, and every and all dessert!
The restaurant was opened in 1996 by Nicolas and Frederic Meschin, brother from France. Nicolas Peters was the opening chef and was here for 25 years. Covid came and he left and in his place was Jonathan Portela. In 2024 I took over and have been here ever since!

The appetizers

We started with the Mezze Plate, which was a beautiful assortment of Muhamarra, Baba Ghanoush, hummus, carrot salad, cauliflower salad, cucumber salad, and deviled egg. Each component had its own personality, and together they created a colorful and flavorful introduction to the meal. It was perfect for sharing and gave us a wonderful taste of the Mediterranean influences throughout the menu.

The Grilled Endive Salad was another lovely surprise. The slightly charred endive paired beautifully with the whipped blended cashew, mandarin, candied pecans, and citrus vinaigrette. The combination of bitter, sweet, creamy, crunchy, and bright citrus flavors was very well thought out.

And then came the Portuguese Piri-Piri ShrimpWOW!!! This dish was absolutely fantastic. The Black Tiger shrimp were perfectly cooked and beautifully complemented by garlic, flatbread, crispy shiitake mushrooms, and sorrel. The flavors were vibrant without overpowering the shrimp, and the execution was spot-on. This is definitely a dish I would order again without hesitation!

The entrées

The Herb-Crusted Rack of Lamb was cooked beautifully, tender and full of flavor. The sauce diable, sun-dried tomato pesto, citrus agrodolce, and fresh herb salad created a wonderful balance between richness, acidity, and freshness. A sophisticated and very satisfying plate.

The Local Black Cod was another standout. The corn fondue, Toybox squash, Espelette, chives, and cream fumet created a delicate but deeply flavorful combination. The cod was wonderfully prepared, and the creamy elements were balanced by the subtle heat of Espelette and the freshness of the herbs.

But the Whole Branzino à la Plancha was an absolute must. The sea bass was incredibly tasty, perfectly cooked, and had that wonderful texture you hope for from a beautifully prepared whole fish. Served with chimichurri and lemon, it was simple enough to let the quality of the fish shine while still bringing plenty of flavor. Definitely one of the highlights of the evening!

Cocktails

The cocktail list is impressive, and I chose the Toki Highball with Toki Suntory whisky, yuzu, a hint of agave, and vegan foam. It was exactly what I wanted—not sweet, refreshing, beautifully balanced, and incredibly easy to drink. The yuzu brought a lovely brightness to the whisky without masking its character.

Dessert

After such a generous and delicious meal, we decided to keep dessert light and healthy with the coconut sorbet and berries. It was the perfect ending—fresh, refreshing, not overly sweet, and delicious.

Overall, The Little Door is much more than just a beautiful restaurant. It is an experience: romantic, intimate, lively, and wonderfully atmospheric, with a menu that celebrates fresh ingredients and thoughtful combinations. The food is beautifully executed, the service is warm and attentive, and the setting makes it particularly special for a date night or a memorable evening with someone you love.

The Piri-Piri shrimp and whole Branzino are absolute must-orders, but honestly, I would happily come back and work my way through the entire menu. A beautiful Los Angeles dining experience that I highly recommend!
