Steve Martin’s Picasso at the Lapin Agile Play – March 26th, 2004

This very entertaining ongoing play is worth seeing for the comedy and knowledge of some great historians of the past. The quaint Ruskin Theater is a nice place for a date or out with friends to see this play or whatever is in store for the future.

STEVE MARTIN’S PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE OPENS MARCH 26 AT
RUSKIN GROUP THEATRE IN SANTA MONICA
Picasso At the Lapin Agile; the 1993 comedy by favorite
American humorist and comedian Steve Martin, will run from March 26 through
May 1 at the Ruskin Group Theatre in Santa Monica.
The play is set at a cozy bar in Paris, the Lapin Agile, in 1904. The bar’s
patrons include three men who are convinced of their important place in the
coming century: Young Pablo Picasso, who comes across quite confident in his social life with women and talents as a painter, who will paint ;Les Demoiselles
D’Avignon in 1907 among other most prominent pieces of work and still considered one of the greatest artists of all time; Young Albert Einstein, who comes across as a genious and modest know it all, who will publish his Special
Theory Of Relativity in 1905 ; and Charles Dabernow Schmendiman, an inventor- who comes across quite funny and not believable.
There’s also a visiting time traveler, a Singer from Memphis, Tennessee
who’s skilled with a guitar and wears blue suede shoes. Did someone see Elvis in the Building?
Picasso was famously a womanizer and he is depicted here having
simultaneous romances with Suzanne, a young mademoiselle, and Germaine, a
waitress and the bartender’s lady. History records that Einstein, too, was a
great hit with the ladies, but there are reasons Martin didn’t entitle his
play;Picasso And Einstein; Then there’s the Singer, who was
himself a legendary Burnin’ Hunk O’ Love.
On this special Paris night in 1904, the people who gather at the Lapin
Agile will fairly bubble over and gush with optimism and enthusiasm for the
new century. The audience will come away with better understandings of
Einstein’s famous theory (no joke), the genius of Picasso and what he was
accomplishing, and why a true comprehension of the nature of Beauty was
central to the work of both men. Oh yes, the proceedings are also hilarious,
as one would expect from the pen of Steve Martin.
Mikey R. Myers helms ;Picasso.  Recently at the Ruskin, he’s
produced L.A. Café’ Plays;Loose Ends", in which
he also appeared.
