Bet Tzedek Fundraiser for the Justice Ball on 7/9/05 in Hollywood (7/05) Review and Info

(July 9, 2005: Hollywood CA)   I have just three words for you about TJB-9: another smashing success!  Okay, here are a few more words. Hundreds of (mostly single) professionals (including a lot of lawyers and their pals) came out in droves to pack the Hollywood Palladium, buying both general and VIP tickets to support Bet Tzedek Legal Center, a Jewish legal fund whose mission is to provide a range of legal services (and, well, justice) for all people in the LA community, especially the older and less fortunate (and the poor and broke) who would otherwise have no means of representation.

The silent auction led to even more funds being raised for Bet Tzedek, as did the casino-style gambling.  Delicious desserts and coffee flowed freely to all, and many revelers imbibed drinks from the cash bar.  Then it was time to turn to the stage and luxuriate in the unique sonic bravado of Ozomatli.  Their Latin/soul/funk/rap sounds blended perfectly — rockin’ rhythms and rhymes never felt so good.

In addition to all the above, VIP ticket holders were treated to a hosted bar of mixed drinks, plus Izze fruit-flavored beverages and Fuji Water — as well as delectable food delights such as smoked-salmon-with-cream-cheese sushi rolls, quesadillas, chicken skewers and more.  The VIP attendees also got a great swag bag upon leaving the party, including a DVD, CDs, a cookbook, Virgin Diet Cola, Rockstar Energy drink, Lance Christopher Salon free hairstyle voucher, and more.  (So remember to upgrade to VIP tix next year! It is worth it.)

All attendees seemed to make time to get down on the huge dance floor, not only to Ozomatli (introduced by our new Mayor!), but also the energetic wig-wearing dance-inspiring disco/70s tribute act Boogie Knights.  There were still a hundred or so hearty souls standing at the very end of the party, when 1:30 am rolled around — a bit tired perhaps, but satisfied with another amazingly fun Justice Ball.  Mark your calendars for 2006, and make sure you get tickets early to attend what has truly become a fine tradition.  It just wouldn’t be summer in LA without it.

A non-profit legal center providing free legal representation to low-income, elderly and disabled residents of Los Angeles County, Bet Tzedek Legal Services began as a one-night-a-week storefront community law office staffed by volunteers in the Fairfax area in 1974.  All net proceeds will benefit Bet Tzedek—Hebrew for the “house of justice”—which today is one of the nation’s premier legal services organizations, providing free assistance to more than 10,000 people of every racial and religious background at its headquarters in the Fairfax area, its office in North Hollywood and at more than 30 senior centers throughout Los Angeles County.  With a dedicated staff of over 55 and more than 400 active volunteers, Bet Tzedek makes a crucial difference in the lives of the most vulnerable members of the community.
