USA comes back to beat Denmark 3-1 in National Soccer Teams 2007 Debut (1/07)

In the first USA Men’s soccer game since their dreadful World Cup showing last
June, the national team looked pretty good despite playing without many of it’s
elite player. On the other hand, Denmark brought in only their local players and
only one had past experience in international soccer friendlies. The Danes took a
1-0 lead before the USA team responded with a penalty kick goal by Landon Donovan.
Donavon was a disappointment last year not scoring at all in any of the USA games.
He had been player of the year twice before. That penalty kick was set up by
Ricardo Clark who was fouled on a nice run into the Denmark zone. The best goal of
the day came from Jonathan Bornstein after a beautiful assist from Justin Mapp. The
3rd goal was scored by Kenny Cooper. Both Bornstein and Cooper were playing in
their first national games for the USA. The final score was 3-1 USA in coach, Bob
Bradley’s debut replacing Bruce Arena. Only about 10,000 fans showed up at the Home
Depot Center on 1/20/07 for the match but they were routing the team on. The Home
Depot Center in Carson, Ca. is the home of the LA Galaxy and new home for recent
acquisition David Beckham ( 5 year contract for $250 million) breaking all kinds of
records for the largest contract in this country.
Next up for the USA is Mexico on February 7th in Arizona followed by Ecuador in
Florida on March 25 and finally Guatemala in Texas on March 28th. Then the team is
scheduled to play in the Gold Cup from June 6-24th (location to be determined) and
Copa America from June 26- July 14th also location to be determined.
This team is young and fluid but time will tell when they play some higher
ranked teams such as Mexico or others from South America. Last year’s team went
6-4-3 but in their 3 games in the World Cup they lost 2 and tied one vs, Italy as
the Italians scored an own goal helping the USA. The only goal by during the
tournament by the team was from player of the year Clint Dempsy vs. Ghana.
Keep track on upcoming games and information at www.ussoccer.com and keep your
eyes open for Beckham’s Galaxy debut in 2008 as he has to finish his contract with
Real Madrid this year even though he will not playing with the team, just practicing
as the coach mentioned. More info at www.ussoccer.com
