The “Poop Deck” Seafood Restaurant in the Bahamas (Nassau & Paradise Island) is the Best (3/09)

Next time you make it down to Nassau Island in the Bahamas; don’t miss the best authentic Bahamian food restaurant, “The Poop Deck”. There are actually two locations- the newer one at the beach in Sandy Port and the original one we visited at the Nassau Yacht Haven Marina near the bridge heading to Paradise Island. This location has been there 37 years and started by the hospitable Spanish owner, Eloy Roldon. Mr. Roldon had a dream and followed it to establish the very popular restaurant that specializes in fresh local seafood authentic Bahamian food.

Starters include fresh stone crab claws, native “Conch” salad, fritters and delicious chowder.  Conch comes from a beautiful pinkish/white shellfish and best resembles a firm clam in taste.

Specialties at The Poop Deck include fresh grilled Grouper, Mahi Mahi and Shrimp from around the Bahamian Islands.  Other entrees include fresh local lobster tail, sweet potato fish cakes, chicken, steak and Island Crack Conch.  Everything (except the French fries) on the menu is fresh and made on site.  There usually is a “catch of the Day” like Snapper or another local fish.  All meals come with 2 side dishes and we highly recommend the peas and rice dish and the fried plantains.  This was by far the best meal we had during our entire stay.  Daily Happy hour with complimentary appetizers is from 5-7pm.

The atmosphere is casual with open air seating and plastic chairs to make you feel like you are on the deck of a boat. The Poop Deck overlooks the harbor. It is not a fancy place but the food is fresh and authentic and the service is excellent. Their motto is “There is no other place near this place, like this place, so… this must be the place!” We say this place is a definite must!
