Golden China Restaurant neighborhood place in Culver City- February 2015

We think that when you go to your smaller neighborhood Chinese restaurant, whether you’re in Culver City, Venice, or anywhere in LA, it’s nice to find those 1 or 2 dishes that they do consistently well because really that’s what gets me to come back over and over again.  Golden China didn’t disappoint. Topping my favorite dish by far was their eggplant with black bean sauce.  If I had to describe the experience of tasting such succulent favors in one word, it’d be amazing.  In fact, given the choice, I’d go back any day of the week to partake in a second helping.  Yes, it’s that good.  I think many times we associate eggplant with Italian dishes (or at least we do) and the combination of the vegetable mixed in a tasty Chinese flavored bean sauce, was a delightful surprise.

The menu boasts no MSG, which is imperative for those of us that are sensitive to it. If you are interested in eating healthy, it felt like there were several great dishes to choose from.  I was happy to hear that they had brown rice. One such dish, that we absolutely devoured, was the Dry Sautéed String Beans.  They were cooked to perfection–crunchy and extremely tasty.  The chicken chow main was a staple.

If you’re looking for a seafood, we also tried the popcorn shrimp, and we were impressed at the lightness of the breading, which was just enough to give it a bit of a crunch.  The shrimp were cooked very nicely, while it’s sauce was sweet with just a touch of spicy.
