Los Angeles Dining

Mandarette Chinese Cafe delicious food- a fixture for 35 years in LA- December 2019

Just visited Mandarette Chinese Cafe for dinner and I can see why they have been in business 35 yrs. The food and service were exquisite. We started with the war wonton soup with chicken & shrimp wontons and tried the mushu veggie crepes.

For main courses, we had the spicy poached cod in a broth filled with numbing flavorful peppercorns. Be careful to pick them out or your mouth will really get numb. We also tried the scallops with black peppercorn sweet sauce that melted in our mouths. For sides we had the garlic noodles and steamed eggplant. Everything was completely delicious and I highly recommend dining here. Enhance your meal with some sake and your meal will be very satisfying. The manager David and owner Ken checked on all the tables and customers to make sure everything was going well and the servers worked hard.

To help ring in their 35th anniversary they are announcing new fall menu items. Best known for its strawberry shrimp, but Mandarette Chinese Café offers a mix of traditional and modern Chinese memorable dishes.

Owner Ken Yang has been a mainstay in this Beverly Grove neighborhood for 35 years; he has nurtured his customer base and understands this area well. He says, “My customers know exactly what they will be getting and they have been coming back for more for the last 35 years. They are locals, people driving by, walking by, and tourists all hearing the praises about the great Chinese delicacies that Mandarette Chinese Café claims its own.”

About Owner Ken Yang, and The Traditions of Mandarette Chinese Café:

My family’s culinary journey started from a little town, just north of Taipei, where my father started his traditional training in the kitchen at a young age of 13.  After completing the traditional culinary training from his master, he worked at various establishments in Taipei.  By the age of 25, my father was discovered by a Japanese Chinese restaurant owner and invited him to go to Japan and worked as the head chef of his kitchen.

When Phillip Chiang first opened Mandarette Chinese Cafe in September 1984, my father was the head chef and partner with him at the Mandarin in Beverly Hills.  He helped created all the wonderful dishes at the Mandarette Chinese Cafe.  The restaurant was later sold to their family in early 1990.  Over the last 35 years, Mandarette Chinese Café remains a local favorite for gathering of all occasions.  Their mission is always to provide the best fresh ingredients to their customers without overpowering with sauces.  You can always taste the goodness in each bite.

4 New Fall Menu Items for Mandarette Chinese Café 35th Anniversary Celebration for Customers to Enjoy:

Three Cup Chicken, Beef, Or Squid; is a classic Taiwanese dish made three ingredients; sesame oil, soy sauce and rice wine. The chicken, beef or squid is cooked in the sauce until tender before the sauce is reduced to a glaze that coats the meat.

Braised Beef Noodle Soup is the symbolic Chinese comfort food. Found all throughout China and Taiwan, Beef is slow-cooked to perfection and the broth is rich with Chinese herbs and spices.  Topped with fresh spinach and scallions, it is the ultimate meal for either lunch or dinner.

Sichuan Poached Fish Fillet is a dish originated from the Sichuan cuisine.  Their approach is to make the fish fillet from fresh sole and cook it with Sichuan numbing pepper, chilly pod, vegetable oil, minced garlic and other spices.  It offers a good combination of tender white meat fish, crispness of the bean sprouts, hot spicy flavor of chili pepper, and a touch of numbing sensation of Sichuan pepper.  It excites all the senses in your taste buds.

Aromatic Fiery Shrimps is a traditional Sichuan style spicy shrimp with Sichuan Pepper and spices.  Crispy shrimp stir fried with chili pod, Sichuan pepper, minced garlic, sliced ginger and scallion over sesame oil. For the shrimp love, it is so appetizing, scrumptious, and flavorful that you will be craving its taste after you have tried it.

Also expect to find classics including Won Ton Soup, Kung Pao Shrimp and Lemon Chicken. But then be surprised – and delighted – with this popular eatery’s special modern dishes, only found here at their Beverly Grove location. There’s the delicious Crispy Strawberry Shrimp Mandarette Chinese Café Special, quick-fried shrimp served with strawberries in a sweet and spicy sauce; or check out the Lobster Noodle Mandarette Chinese Cafe Special and you’ll find lobster tail drenched in garlic sauce and served on a bed of egg noodles, lots of bang for your buck!
