An Exceptional Day Tour with Tours Oaxaca Dreams Travel
We had an outstanding experience with Tours Oaxaca Dreams Travel, and this tour truly became one of the highlights of our trip to Oaxaca. They offer several multi-day tours, but since it was our first time in Oaxaca and our schedule was limited, we chose the Hierve el Agua Tour—and it was absolutely the right decision.
Communication was smooth and professional from the beginning. I highly recommend contacting them directly via WhatsApp. They respond quickly, are very efficient, and clearly care about their guests. After booking, they sent us a detailed schedule for the day along with useful tips to help us prepare. On the morning of the tour, pickup was right on time (around 8:00 a.m., depending on your location), directly from our lodging.
The tour bus was very comfortable, clean, and spacious, with plenty of legroom and enough space for everyone to relax throughout the long but very well-paced day. This made a big difference, especially considering the full itinerary.
We were welcomed by our guide Luis, who greeted us with a big smile and great energy. He speaks excellent English, explained everything clearly, and shared so much cultural and historical context throughout the day. At every stop, he made sure we had enough free time to explore, take photos, relax, or enjoy each site at our own pace.
Our first stop was the legendary El Tule Tree in Santa María del Tule. Seeing the widest tree in the world—over 2,000 years old—was truly impressive and a perfect start to the day.
Next, we visited a textile community and family-owned business, which was one of the most memorable parts of the tour. We were warmly welcomed and shown the entire process of making rugs and scarves from wool, from start to finish. They demonstrated traditional wooden looms and explained how different natural dyes are created from local plants, producing a wide range of beautiful colors. This process is remarkable and honestly mind-blowing. After the presentation, we were invited to browse their showcase, where you can purchase their handmade work directly from the artisans. If you’re looking to buy a high-quality, authentic, handmade rug, I highly recommend doing it here.
We then continued to the archaeological site of Mitla, famous for its unique and intricate geometric stone mosaics—designs you won’t find anywhere else in Mexico.
From there, we headed to the farthest point of the tour: Hierve el Agua. The petrified waterfalls are absolutely breathtaking and unlike anything else. I recommend bringing a change of clothes and a swimsuit if you want to take a dip. Personally, I didn’t swim because the water was a bit too cold in late December, but walking around, soaking in the views, and taking photos was still incredible. Also, don’t miss the fruit stands here—the mango was one of the best I’ve ever tasted.
Afterward, we stopped for a buffet lunch featuring traditional Oaxacan cuisine. The selection was excellent and it’s a great opportunity to taste a little bit of everything—from classic local specialties to comforting regional dishes. Everything was flavorful and satisfying.
Our final stop was a mezcal factory, where we learned the step-by-step process of making mezcal. It was fascinating to discover that producing mezcal requires several stages and at least seven years of experience to truly know when the product is ready. Of course, we also had the chance to taste a variety of mezcals, which was a perfect way to end the day.
A helpful tip: bring cash in pesos, as you may want to buy snacks, fruit, mezcal, or souvenirs along the way.
The tour runs daily, departing around 8:30 a.m. and returning around 7:30 p.m., and includes tourist transportation, passenger insurance, and a certified guide, with pickup and drop-off at your hotel.
Overall, this experience was remarkable and left us with truly memorable moments from our trip to Oaxaca. If you want a tour that is well-organized, educational, comfortable, and deeply connected to local culture, Tours Oaxaca Dreams Travel is an excellent choice. Highly recommended!

Robert’s Eco Tours offers a wide variety of experiences in and around Puerto Escondido, but our main goal was to visit the bioluminescent lagoon of Manialtepec, and overall it was a very memorable adventure.
The lagoon is surrounded by mangroves and rich biodiversity. During the rainy season, it connects with the sea, which is when the plankton microorganisms thrive. These microorganisms are present year-round, and when night falls, the lagoon comes alive with nature’s light show. Immersing yourself in the water and watching the bioluminescent plankton glow in different tones is truly fascinating and magical.
Our guide picked us up right in front of our hotel. Once you make a reservation, they send you the updated pickup time via WhatsApp, which makes communication very easy. The pickup time depends on the size of the group.
Our driver, Jaciel, arrived exactly on time and greeted us with a warm smile. We rode in a comfortable van with plenty of space and headed straight to the lagoon, which is about a 20-minute drive. During the ride, Jaciel shared some information about what we were going to experience, and it definitely added to our excitement.
Once we arrived, the adventure continued with our guide Ramses. We boarded a small speedboat with individual seats on each side. The boat ride itself was an experience — speeding through the dark water, following another boat, communicating only by flashlight. You could tell the guides were very experienced. The night sky, stars, and moon made the ride absolutely beautiful.
After about 15 minutes, we reached the main spot where other boats were already waiting. Floating tents were set up on the water, and we were invited to get inside to experience the bioluminescence.
One thing I wish had been explained beforehand is that if the night is very bright (full moon or strong moonlight), the bioluminescence may not be as visible. Also, the colors vary depending on the water’s salinity — when the water is less salty, the light appears more white, and only under perfect conditions does it glow bright blue. We had about 20 minutes to play with the water and observe the effect.
Because of this, I would recommend calling or messaging ahead of time to ask about the moon phase and water conditions for that night.
That said, the experience was still great, and we truly enjoyed it. The return trip was the same route back, and I highly recommend bringing warmer clothes or a cover, as you’ll be riding back in wet swimsuits.
The entire tour lasts approximately 3.5 hours.
