Orphan Jewel Fundraiser at the Sheraton LAX on 12/6/08

     What: Silent auction to support the launching of a Family Resource Center in Bellflower to serve those not “eligible” under their existing service contracts.  Many children, youth, and families at-risk in our communities have not yet reached the point of severe crisis to prompt contact with the authorities, and therefore have not become “eligible” to benefit from the care and assistance Olive Crest staff can and do provide every day under its established contracts.  The Family Resource Center concept is designed to help close that gap between those in need and those who can help.

    Olive Crest Homes and Services for Abused Children has been a leader in providing care for abused, abandoned and severely neglected children.
    Family Resource Centers can help prevent further crises in families, and consequently prevent more undesirable problems such as child maltreatment, juvenile delinquency, school failure, and a host of other maladies that plague families in our communities.

    Why: In Los Angeles County the number of youngsters aging out of  the foster system without a permanent family is at an all-time high. They are quickly confronted with the realities of life not only without the support of a permanent family, but also without life skills needed to cope adequately with obstacles that could potentially derail their successful transition: unemployment, poor educational outcomes, homelessness and inadequate healthcare. One in four will be incarcerated within two years of leaving foster care; one in five will become homeless, only half will graduate from high school, and less than three percent receive college degrees.
    Obviously, there is a compelling need for greater support for these youngsters if these trends are to be reversed or meaningfully diminished. We, Orphan Jewel and Angelwingz for Olive Crest, want to be part of the solution, part of the effort to make sure that Olive Crest gets the support it needs to give our kids the support they need. 
    This event is a opportunity to support the wonderful work done by Olive Crest to provide support for kids who need help.
