Cirque Eloize Rain March 31st 07

Cirque Eloize “Rain” directed by Daniele Finza Pasca opened at the Irvine Barclay
Theatre on the UC Irvine Campus on March 31st, 2007. It originally premiered in
2003 at the theatre. This masterful show doesn’t get the recognition like Cirque du
Solei but the level of talent is comparable. There are two halves with an
intermission. This show like many modern circus’ explores the unconscious with
acrobatics, music and dance, however it does not take itself too seriously and even
pokes fun at itself. The show is infused with humor and variety. The music, the
costumes even the humor seemed to hearkened us back to the turn of the century. The
first half starts with confetti falling like rain followed by incredible acts such
as fluid acrobats, an amazing juggler, and the cast of thirteen performing back
flips, trampoline and balance beam jumps and a fantastic gigantic hula-hoop act.
Using minimal set pieces the stage was transformed by a changing scrim. The second
half starts with singing and more acrobatic flips by the performers. Other notable
acts were the female tissue acrobatics, multiple jugglers, a contortionist, male duo
strength balancers and an aerial hoop performer. The finale is spectacular and
involves a stage full of water with the performers sliding and diving like kids at
play. Water falls from the sky which is a beautiful ending to the show called Rain.
The cast of thirteen stars artists, acrobats, singers and dancers. We highly
recommend this show. See it before it leaves Irvine. Check the website for future
tour dates.
