Legendary Rock Icon Graham Nash of CSNY and Solo Fame To Host Opening Reception Benefiting the Elton John AIDS Foundation

 

(Los Angeles, CA) December 5, 2006photo l.a. 2007, the largest Photographic Art Exposition in the United States, will be held January 18-21 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, located at 1855 Main Street. Created by Stephen Cohen, producer of the highly acclaimed art fairs photo new york, photo san francisco, photo MIAMI and ART LA, the show will feature the finest photographic art on display and for sale, from the earliest 19th Century photographic experiments to the most contemporary photography and photo-based art.

 

More than 65 premier galleries and private dealers representing International and U.S. artists will be on display at photo l.a. 2006.  Participating exhibitors include Los Angeles galleries: Ace Gallery, Stephen Cohen Gallery, Paul Kopeikin Gallery, Craig Krull Gallery, Scalo | Guye and Rose Gallery; New York galleries: Cohen Amador Gallery, Gitterman Gallery, Jenkins Johnson Gallery, Daneyal Mahmood Gallery, Yossi Milo Gallery, Yancey Richardson Gallery; and International galleries: Czech Center of Photography (Czech Republic), Hackelbury Fine Art (London), Picture Photo Space Inc. (Osaka), Serge Plantureux (Paris) and Galerie Esther Woerdehoff (Paris).  

 

Highlights of the exhibition will include works by world-renowned contemporary artists Robert Polidori, Larry Fink, William Eggleston, Tseng Kwong Chi, Joel Peter-Witkin, Nick Brandt, Loretta Lux, Pieter Hugo, Carrie Mae Weems and Mona Kuhn and works by Walker Evans, Diane Arbus, Edmund Teske, Berenice Abbott, Weegee, Edward Weston, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Harry Callahan and Frederick Sommer.


photo l.a. 2007 will present an opportunity for the city of Los Angeles to host a cultural event that will rival New York and San Francisco with its artistic significance,” says Stephen Cohen, producer of photo l.a. 2007, owner of the Stephen Cohen Gallery in Los Angeles, and co-owner of the Cohen Amador Gallery in New York.  “In the past few decades, Los Angeles has established a major presence on the photographic art scene and we look forward to welcoming an international retinue of galleries, artists, curators, collectors, critics and art enthusiasts to our city to appreciate the best art contemporary photographers have to offer.”

 

The preview reception, hosted by legendary rock artist, photographer and photography collector Graham Nash, will take place on Thursday, January 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. and benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Nash is also the co-founder of Nash Editions, a digital fine-arts printmaking studio. Established by Sir Elton John in 1992, the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) has raised nearly $120 million to support HIV/AIDS prevention and service programs in 55 countries around the globe. Today, EJAF is one of the world’s leading nonprofit HIV/AIDS organizations. EJAF focuses on supporting community-based prevention education programs, harm reduction programs, and direct services to persons living with HIV/AIDS, especially populations with special needs. These efforts include HIV/AIDS-related physical and mental health services, HIV testing and counseling, street outreach and education, food distribution, assisted living services, social service coordination, and community volunteer recruitment and support.

 

The Elton John AIDS Foundation is committed to funding prevention education and service programs for people affected by HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles and around the world.  What better way to celebrate the spirit and vitality of our local community than to partner with photo l.a. 2007 to host its opening reception?” says Scott Campbell, Executive Director of the Elton John AIDS Foundation.  “This event will bring us all together to enjoy fine works of photography in support of EJAF and its work in fighting HIV/AIDS.”


In conjunction with the exhibition, a lecture and seminar series will take place from January 19–21 with guest lecturers including internationally renowned photographers Anderson & Low, Jim Goldberg, Todd Hido and Alec Soth.   Mary Virginia Swanson, photography consultant, Stephen White, collector, historian and dealer in art photography and Virginia Heckert, associate curator of photography at the J. Paul Getty Museum will address seminar audiences.

Exhibition hours are Friday, January 19 and Saturday, January 20, 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, January 21, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.  Tickets are $20 for a one-day pass and $30 for a three-day pass.
