AltaMed’s History and Growth

It all started in spring of 1969. America wrestled with the great debate over equal rights and access to health care and social services. In the midst of this turbulence, AltaMed was born in East Los Angeles. Doctors, nurses, and social workers—all volunteers—began serving the health care needs of people with no place else to turn. For more than 40 years, AltaMed has provided coordinated, culturally appropriate health and human services in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, with particular attention to Latino and other multi-ethnic communities. AltaMed has maintained a fundamental commitment to provide medical care to the uninsured as well as the underinsured population. As California’s largest Community Health Center, AltaMed operates 44 sites, serving over 160,000 patients, providing more than 600,000 visits annually.

Dear Dr. Ricardo Puertas,

I would like to say a few words about Dr. Lucio Sanchez (my hero).

When my cancer was first diagnosed, I was quite frightened. I can remember him telling me that I was in very good shape (good body weight, good internal organs, etc.) and he was going to get whatever I needed to get well.

Those words were a huge help in my developing a good attitude for treatment.

I thank my lucky stars that Dr. Sanchez was my primary doctor!

Yours truly,

Michael

East LA Meets Napa

Six years ago, AltaMed was looking to start a new fundraising event and several dedicated volunteers and long-time friends of AltaMed formed the Wine Committee and started East LA Meets Napa. The group wanted to bring recognition to the hardworking families of East LA, who owned and operated some of the best Mexican restaurants in Los Angeles. These restaurants were then paired with wines from the Napa Valley produced by Latino vintners and families. Today, East LA Meets Napa has become one of the premier wine tasting events of Southern California. It’s success has been due to the generosity of the restaurants and wineries who donate the food and wine that hundreds come to taste annually. Every year, the event grows more popular adding new participants, each with a unique flare that ties back to Latino contributions to the food and wine culture that continues to spread across the globe.

Thank you to the Wineries and Restaurants that donate their wonderful cuisine and

exquisite wines to make this event a success. Current and past participants include:
