Diavolo Dance group returns to the Broad Stage in Santa Monica from May 1st-3rd, 2015-Preview, Tickets

Diavolo / Architecture in Motion returns to

The Broad Stage with a dynamic program including the West Coast Premiere of “Cubicle”

The renowned Los Angeles dance troupe continues to

personify architecture in motion

SANTA MONICA,CA,April 26, 2015Local favorite and worldwide wonder Diavolo / Architecture in Motion returns to The Broad Stage for four performances only, following a sold-out run of performances in 2012. Artistic Director Jacques Heim and his troupe of 10 dancers will present a program featuring Fluid Infinities, the final installment of the L’Espace du Temps (Space of Time) trilogy, set to Symphony No. 3 by Philip Glass, and the West Coast Premiere of Cubicle, a fulfillment of Diavolo’s creative process.

Fluid Infinities is set on an abstract dome structure sitting on a reflection of itself. The performers explore metaphors of infinite space, continuous movement, and our voyage into the unknown future. The dome’s organic patterns evoke the craters of the moon, a honeycomb of bees, a shifting brain, or an undiscovered starship. As the trilogy concludes, Fluid Infinities investigates the persistence of life through struggle and the promise of life to change beyond the space of time.

Set in an abstract corporate America, Cubicle explores the human condition under cramped control and a monotonous reality, exposing an underlying counterbalance between freedom and anarchy in the workplace. Anonymity and confinement set the pace in this corporate sea of grey as we witness a multitude of shifting landscapes as abstract representations of a familiar work environment. Boxing in both their sanity and distinctiveness, we witness the struggle to maintain a sense of individuality on the corporate climb as the performers labor against a homogenized work mentality, finding solidarity only within themselves and each other.

Combining lyrical movement with risk-taking athleticism and large architectural objects, Diavolo re-imagines what dance is with a striking visual manifestation.

[Diavolo] defines the art of this city.” –Los Angeles Times

-What we do on stage is like a live abstract painting. There is no narrative, but strong themes pervade the work such as human struggle, fear, danger, survival, chaos, order, deconstruction, reconstruction, destiny, destination, faith, and love. –Jacques Heim, Artistic Director

Diavolo is a fusion of many different movement vocabularies such as everyday movement, ballet, contemporary, acrobatics, gymnastics, martial arts, and hip-hop.

Founded in 1992 by Jacques Heim, Diavolo has performed for hundreds of thousands of concertgoers throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Diavolo has created dozens of dance works that form one of the dance field’s most compelling repertoires. Diavolo brings dance to tens of thousands of community members annually through young people’s concerts, in-school assemblies, intensive trainings, master classes, and residencies nationwide.

The mission of Diavolo is to further the transformative style of Architecture in Motion by providing dance performances, training, and community programs for all. Diavolo/Architecture in MotionTM explores the relationship and interaction between the human body and its architectural environment to understand how we are being affected not only socially, but physically and emotionally.
