LA Galaxy survive on late header by Gordon as Keane comes back from injury vs Houston- May 2015

Carson, Ca. It was a great night of soccer on May 23rd at Stub Hub Center as the Galaxy faced the Houston Dynamo in their 13th game of the season. The first half was pretty balanced with Dynamo getting close to scoring in the 9th minute when Will Bruin came face to face with Galaxy goalie Jaime Penedo but he was denied as he came out for an excellent save. The Galaxy’s best chance came with a deflected shot from Swedish midfielder Mika Vayrynen going just over the cross bar. It was 0-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Coach Bruce Arena used 2 subs for Robbie Keane and Alan Gordon while Zardes moves wide as left winger. Gordon helped the midfield recoup few balls and Keane gave the attack and confidence that was lacking in the first half. It was 0-0 as they went to extra time as the Galaxy defense led by Omar Gonzalez didn’t allow much and they shut down Bruin and leading scorer Barnes.

The Gordon-Keane combination in the box provided by a great assist for Gordon’s perfect header just over the Dynamo goalie for the only score of the game.  Gordon’s goal was voted goal of the week.  This gave Galaxy an important win in the last second of the 4 minutes injury time allowing Galaxy to pass Houston on the table and grab that 6th place good for the playoffs. The fantastic finish was followed by a wonderful fireworks show that had the crowd driving home happy on Memorial Day weekend. LA awaits the arrival of Steven Gerrard from Liverpool to shore up the mid-field sometime this summer.
