The Standard Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles – October 19th, 2003

The Standard, Downtown LA

standard rooftopVisiting the Standard Lobby and Rooftop on a busy weekend night was quite an experience.  Getting to the roof to party and dance has its perks but you must be on the list or staying at the Hotel to do so.  Once up there,  there is some great people watching, drinking, dancing, and lying around on couches.  The less fortunate hang out in the main lobby area to relax, mingle and drink.  A real fun experience especially on a nice night to hang outside and overlook the city of LA.   A fact sheet is below for more information on the Hotel.

Located in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, The Standard, Downtown LA, is the second in hotelier Andre Balazs’ collection of chic, affordable business hotels; other properties include The Standard, Hollywood, Chateau Marmont in Hollywood, The Mercer in New York, The Raleigh in Miami Beach, and Sunset Beach on Shelter Island.

Location:           The Standard, Downtown LA, resides on one of the most central and significant blocks in Downtown Los Angeles. Situated midway between Bunker Hill and the Staples Center, it is one of three culturally and historically significant properties situated on the block; the main branch of the city Public Library, the prestigious California Club, and the former headquarters of The Superior Oil Company.  Also in close proximity are Wells Fargo, AT&T, Citicorp, Bank of America, the Los Angeles Convention Center, the Walt Disney Concert Hall and abundant cultural amenities.

Property History: The building was originally constructed by William M. Keck, Sr. to accommodate the corporate headquarters of his family’s company, Superior Oil, in 1956. The Keck family recruited the pre-eminent Los Angeles architect of the period, Claud Beelman, to embark on a building design that was intended to reflect the technological advancements and corporate optimism of its time. Beelman, who was famous for his classic beaux-arts buildings of the 1920s, approached this assignment with a modernity that led him to employ unadorned, but timeless, materials of Carrara white and black marble and finely detailed stainless steel spandrels both on the exterior and interior. Beelman’s innovations established the building as one of the finest of its time in Southern California. The building’s majestic marble and stainless steel lobby has now been designated a historic architectural landmark.
