Festival of the Arts/Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach this Summer (6/07)

DATES/TIMES               Festival Exhibit: July 1 through August 31; open daily 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. (Closed
July 4 and August 25)

PLACE                           Irvine Bowl Park, 650 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach, CA 92651
                   (near downtown, five-minute walk from ocean)

ADMISSION                Festival Exhibit: Exhibit entrance is a season pass, $7 ($4 seniors and students),
                   Laguna Beach residents FREE with proper I.D.  Children 12 and under free.
Special 75th Anniversary Promotions:    
• Anyone age 75 receives free Festival admission.                               
•     Every Monday – 75 cents admission to the exhibit for all.
•     Monday – Thursday from 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.:
        Every 75th person who visits the art exhibition receives free admission

TRANSPORTATION       Free city shuttle buses run continuously, 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., from Laguna Canyon lots and downtown
parking areas to the Festival.  Additional parking available at ACT V parking lot, 1900 Laguna Canyon Road, for
                   $5 per day.

EXHIBIT                          Approximately 145 painters, sculptors, ceramists, jewelers, photographers and other artists display and sell strictly
original works on the Festival grounds in this juried show.

ART WORKSHOPS        Free sessions daily, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for aspiring artists of all ages; supplies provided. 
Raku (Japanese pottery) workshop on Saturdays and a weekday; small materials fee.

ON-SITE     Junior Art Exhibition: Paintings and drawings by some 300 Orange County school children, kindergarten through
EXHIBITIONS                grade 12; Dream, Imagine, Create: The Art of Disney Parks: Artwork by Disney artists and Disney-inspired
    Artwork by aspiring junior artists from the Orange County Therapeutic Arts Center; Scholarship Students Exhibition:
    See the work of college students who received Festival of Arts scholarships in the past and now return as pro-
fessional artists; Project Skimboard 3: Artists from Festival of Arts and Sawdust Festival created works of art using
blank skimboards.  Finished skimboards will be on display at both festivals all summer long.
       
YOUTH ARTS                 Every Wednesday from July 11 through August 22, noon to 2 p.m. for children ages 6-12.
EDUCATION DAYS     Participants will be exposed to a wide variety of visual arts and puppet shows. Reservations required

DEMONSTRATIONS     Watercolor, oil painting, printmaking and other art media daily at various locations on the grounds.

ART TOURS                  Conducted at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily by Festival exhibitors and volunteers at no charge to visitors.

ENTERTAINMENT        Various music and dance performances evenings and weekends.

DINING/SNACKS         Tivoli Terrace, a full-service, garden-setting restaurant overlooking the art exhibit

Essential information about the 2007 Pageant of the Masters

DATES/TIMES             Pageant:  Themed “Young at Heart” July 7 through August 31; staged nightly at 8:30 p.m.
                                             Special Pageant Gala Benefit on Saturday, August 25

ADMISSION            Pageant:  Pageant tickets, $20-$90 (depending on seat location and night of the week);
            a Pageant ticket also acts as a season pass to the Festival exhibit.  Gala tickets $50-$300.

THEME    From the carefree games and richly illustrated fantasies of childhood to wistful nostalgia and imaginative reinventions of our “golden years,” this summer’s celebration pays tribute to the many ways in which artists in every era and culture have encouraged us to never lose sight of our youthful dreams.  Whatever your age, you and your family will find plenty of fun-filled theatrical magic and inspirational artistry on display in Young at Heart.
                                                           

PHYSICAL    Overall area of grounds and bowl: 5.6 acres.  Bowl capacity: 2,600.  Property owned
FACILITIES    by City of Laguna Beach and leased to the Festival.  City receives a percentage of Festival revenues.  The Festival of Arts is now a non-smoking facility.

ORGANIZATION    The Festival of Arts of Laguna Beach is a nonprofit, year-round operation governed by a board of directors whose nine members serve without pay.  Directors are elected by the membership (three each year) for three-year terms.  Each year some 500 volunteers contribute more than 60,000 hours to the enterprise.

HISTORY    The first Festival was in 1932; the first Pageant, 1933.  Except for the war years
1942-45, the Festival/Pageant has been an annual event since the premiËre years—presented first in the downtown area of Laguna Beach, then moved in 1941 to the present canyon site.  (A detailed history sheet is available on request.)

FESTIVAL OF ARTS        Established in 1989 to underwrite the efforts of area art organizations with cultural
FOUNDATION    grants and to award scholarships to Laguna Beach High School students in the fields of art, music, writing, dance and theater arts.  Grants and scholarships given annually average $120,000.

FORUM THEATER    A 232-seat facility on the grounds, completed in 1969; used for Festival-sponsored events throughout the year and also available to qualified organizations.
