Marla’s Cafe offers fantastic food with takeout, delivery in Venice, Ca. – May 2015

 

Marla’s Cafe in Venice is quite the place. Marla, the head chef has so much passion for cooking and has been doing it a long time. She used to have a big catering company and do huge opening events and parties including at the Howard Hughes location. Now she runs the restaurant which does its best business on take out and delivery including a late-night business with one of her sons. Her other son works in the restaurant for this nice family business. They get a lot of business from take out or delivery late evening or even when the bars are closing as they stay open till 3am. We had the pleasure to dine in mid-week and it was a bit quiet but the food was excellent as we ate in the outdoor patio with interesting and antique decor (the only place to dine at this time). They mentioned they will be remodeling inside to create indoor dining sometime this summer or fall.

 

 

We started with the pupusas (delicious deep fried corn masas with chicken and cheese inside). Other small bites include quesadillas, taquitos and their popular tacos. Homemade soups and salads are plentiful. We ordered the spaghetti and meatballs, garlic shrimp and highly recommended lamb chops similar to shanks with a reduced wine sauce. The mashed potatoes are about the only dish made with butter as Marla prepares everything healthy yet so tasty. Other dishes include seafood, chicken, wraps and sandwiches. Prices may seem a bit high but for the quality of food, location and demand at late-night, there is good reason. Definitely give it a try and you won’t be disappointed.
