2016 MLB All-Star Game

July 12, 2016 / Petco Park

San Diego, CA

The 87th MLB All-Star Game provides a few visuals and mementos

The entire week of the MLB All-Star Fan Fest gave fans and baseball purists an opportunity to bathe in

the nostalgic beauty of the game of baseball itself, with the gorgeous skyline, palm trees and rolling hills

of San Diego as the backdrop. In the days leading up to the All-Star game on Tuesday, July 12, there

were several interviews and tributes to the late San Diego native and Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. At

times it was emotional…for fans and for players who shared their stories of playing with one of the

game’s greatest all-time hitters. To punctuate this occasion, everywhere you turn there were throwback

brown and yellow Padre uniforms, especially on Monday when every participant in the Home Run

Derby, regardless of their home team, wore the iconic (yet beautifully hideous) Padre uni.

Game day Tuesday started with the vigor and excitement you would expect from fans…as they flocked

to the Fan Fest exhibit hall, Pepsi Block Party on J Street, and of course Petco Park. The sun was out and

the sky was a bright blue. Although parking was a challenge and became more expensive the closer you

got to the park…all in all, the city of San Diego and the event coordinators were well organized and

ensured traffic and pedestrians proceeded to where they needed to be in orderly fashion.

As the game time approached, the crowds began to file into the entrances, where they were met with

friendly staff who made sure all bags and belongings were checked and security was ensured for the

fans in attendance. The pre-game ceremony began with the introduction of all the players from both

the National and American League sides, followed by an amazing display of patriotism from the Armed

Forces. As the National Anthem was being sung by Rachel Platten, the US Marines unfurled a gigantic

American Flag, which extended from one foul pole to the other. As the anthem come to a close, 6 US

Thunderbird Jets flew over the stadium—truly amazing.

The game itself got underway and for the most part did not feel like a gripping one. The AL jumped out

to an early lead by scoring runs in the second and third innings, but went hitless the rest of the way. The

NL has some opportunities, outhitting the AL 10-8, but did not capitalize with runners in scoring

position. The final score: 4-2 AL, which makes it 4 straight wins for the AL in the Summer Classic.

In a game that seemed like business as usual for the game’s best and brightest, it is important to note

that this also was David (Big Papi) Ortiz’ last All Star game, as he is retiring after this season. In his final

at bat, Ortiz was walked. This provided the opportunity for AL skipper Ned Yost to substitute a pinch

runner for Ortiz and give the fans a moment to give him the standing ovation his long successful career

in the Bigs deserves.

Eric Hosmer, of the defending World Series Champion Kansas City Royals…for his two-hit efforts,

including a home run in the second inning…won the 2016 All Star Game MVP award.

Thanks to the great city of San Diego, the week-long exhibits, Tony Gwynn tributes, and all the pomp

and circumstance of the ceremonial pre-game…the 2016 MLB All Star Game certainly provided the fans,

the players, and baseball alumni another classic memory to add to their scrapbook of nostalgia. It

proved that it isn’t necessarily about the actual game or the score…but the festivities associated with it

all, which brings generations together to celebrate America’s pastime.
